Bismarck Break Room

Visitors book a timed slot for a group of up to four and smash a set number of glassware pieces, media items and electronics in a private break room. Face shields and gloves are supplied, and long sleeves, long pants and closed-toe hard-soled shoes are required, with rentals for anyone short of gear. Guests arrive about 15 minutes early to check in, change and get a safety briefing, and the session ends at the booked time even if they were late. Extra items can be bought in store, and a junk pile of larger objects is available as an add-on.

A break room facility in downtown Bismarck, North Dakota, pitched as a stress relief outlet for ages 10 and up. It also rents out a private event space (the Break Room Bunker) and runs memberships, an online store and donation programs.

What you can smash

Items on offer include glassware, liquor bottles, VCR tapes, CDs, cassettes, records, DVDs, electronics, appliances, statues and junk pile items.

Protective gear supplied by the venue: face shield (included), gloves (included), coveralls for rent $5, sweatshirt for rent $3, rubber boots for rent $5 and long socks $3.

Before you go

Ages 10-12 need at least one adult in the building with the group at all times. Separate online waivers for 18+ and 10-17 (parent or guardian completes the minor waiver).

What to wear: long sleeves covering wrists, pants covering ankles, closed-toe hard-soled boot-like shoes, hooded sweatshirt recommended, no leggings recommended and no Crocs or sandals.

What to bring: long socks if ankle skin shows (or buy for $3) and optional own face protection like a motorcycle helmet.

Your own items: Up to 5 glass or ceramic items per person free. Items may be refused if too dirty or holding liquid other than water.

Booking and cancellation

• Notice: Online reservations recommended; drop-ins aren't guaranteed
• Cancellations: No refund if cancelled within 24 hours of start; to get a refund, email or leave a voicemail at least 24 hours ahead; no refunds on gift cards
• Deposits and refunds: Deposit $15 for the 20 minute session and $30 for the 40 minute session regardless of group size
• Late arrival: Arrive 15 minutes early; late arrival reduces booked session time and sessions aren't extended
